Lesson 1 Buying a home that fits your life
Module 1 | Learning aim: Recognise personal readiness alongside financial readiness.
Before you open the property apps, ask what buying would change for you. You might want stability, permission to make a home your own, or a more suitable place for family life. Those are useful reasons. Feeling behind your friends is a much less useful guide to a large commitment.
Think about the next few years. Could work, caring responsibilities, health, relationships or where you want to live change? You cannot predict everything, but you can avoid building a plan around circumstances staying perfect. A home that needs daily attention may be a poor fit if your time or energy is already stretched.
Renting can provide flexibility while you prepare. Buying can provide control, but also brings repairs and selling costs. Write down what you need from your home and what you can realistically manage. Readiness is not a birthday, a relationship milestone or somebody’s opinion. It is a decision based on your circumstances.
For example, Alex has enough for a deposit but expects to relocate soon. Sam has a smaller budget but intends to stay locally and has a clear monthly plan. Neither person should copy the other’s timetable.
Powwow Tip
Give yourself permission to choose a home and a timetable that suit you.
Your next step
Write three reasons for buying and one reason you might wait. Use worksheet R1 if it helps.
Knowledge check: Is buying immediately the only successful outcome?
