Opening Journal Entry
Tomorrow is another Property Powwow networking event. The platform now contains hundreds of lessons, practical tools and ideas that only a few months ago existed only in my notebook. People I admire are reaching out to collaborate with me. Others are telling me they can see this becoming something much bigger than I ever imagined. The strange thing is... I'm still getting used to believing them. If someone had told me a few years ago that I'd be building a property education platform, speaking at networking events and writing a book about the journey, I would have laughed. Not because I didn't dream. Because I genuinely didn't think I was the person capable of doing it.
The Story Behind It
If you've picked up this book because you want to learn about property, you might be surprised. This isn't really a property book. Property is simply the thread that ties everything together. This is a story about confidence. About resilience. About learning to trust yourself. About discovering that the life experiences you once saw as weaknesses can become your greatest strengths. If you'd met me twenty years ago, I don't think you would have described me as someone destined to build a business, create hundreds of lessons or write a book. I certainly wouldn't have. I was, by most measures, completely ordinary. And that's exactly why I wanted this story to begin here. Because extraordinary journeys don't usually begin with extraordinary people. They begin with ordinary people who simply keep taking the next step. For years, I never thought of myself as particularly extraordinary. I worked in multinational insurance broking, helping companies understand risk and protect what mattered most to them. It was fast-paced, demanding and incredibly rewarding, but it also came with relentless pressure. Looking back, I don't think I appreciated just how much I was asking of myself. Then, in 2006, everything changed. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. That diagnosis changed many things. Some in ways I still struggle to explain. MS affected my energy, my confidence and sometimes my ability to do the simplest things. It forced me to slow down in a world that celebrates speed. For a long time, I saw that as a disadvantage. I watched other people racing ahead while I was carefully managing fatigue, planning rest around work and learning that if I ignored my body's warnings, it would quickly remind me who was really in charge. There were times I felt broken. Defective. As though the life I'd imagined was quietly slipping away. I had no idea that those same experiences would eventually shape everything I built. Then I became pregnant with my son, Jake, and once again my world shifted. Managing a demanding career is one challenge. Managing a chronic illness is another. Add a newborn baby into the mix and suddenly nothing feels predictable anymore. The life I thought I was going to have no longer existed. I had to build a completely different one. I became a Slimming World Consultant shortly after Jake was born. At the time, I thought I was helping people lose weight. Looking back, I can see I was helping people rebuild confidence. Week after week I watched ordinary people achieve things they genuinely didn't believe they were capable of. I didn't realise it then, but I was learning exactly how powerful encouragement could be. Later I moved into estate agency, where I learned that buying and selling houses was rarely just about bricks and mortar. Every property had a story because every client had one too. Buying and selling homes is rarely about the buildings themselves. More often, it's about relationships ending, families growing, dreams changing or fresh starts. Alongside all of that, property investing slowly became more than an interest. It became an education. I attended courses. Read books. Spent thousands of pounds learning from people who were supposedly already where I wanted to be. Some of that education was excellent. Some of it wasn't. Much of it taught me what to do. Very little of it taught me how to believe in myself. What I noticed, though, was that many people entering property felt exactly as I had. Overwhelmed. Unsure where to start. Convinced everyone else knew something they didn't. I tucked that observation away without realising how important it would become. At the time, I had no idea that every job, every challenge, every setback and every lesson was quietly preparing me for something that didn't even have a name yet.
Looking Back
When I look back now, I don't see disconnected jobs or random experiences. I see a trail of experiences that, without me realising it, were quietly preparing me for something much bigger. Insurance taught me how to analyse risk. Slimming World taught me how encouragement can change someone's life. Estate agency taught me that property is really about people. Property investing taught me the difference between glossy promises and everyday reality. Living with MS taught me patience, empathy and the importance of building something sustainably rather than chasing quick wins. At the time, none of those chapters seemed connected. Now I can see they were quietly building the foundations for Property Powwow long before the idea even had a name.
Reflection
For years, I believed I was collecting unrelated experiences. Looking back, I was collecting the exact skills I would one day need. Sometimes life only makes sense in reverse.
