The Making of Parker

Opening Journal Entry

Today I've been thinking about Parker. It's funny really, because when people see him now, they probably assume I set out to build an AI assistant. I didn't. I wasn't trying to build technology. I was trying to solve a problem I'd witnessed over and over again. Every networking event, every message, every conversation seemed to end in the same place. People weren't short of information. They were overwhelmed by it. They didn't know which advice to trust, which strategy to follow or even what question they should ask next. I realised they didn't need another course. They needed someone to walk alongside them. That was the moment Parker quietly began.

The Story Behind It

Parker didn't appear overnight. He started life as a simple idea. I kept asking myself the same question: "If someone is sitting at home this evening, completely overwhelmed by property, how can I help them if I'm not there?" Every month at Property Powwow, I'd meet people who wanted to move forward but didn't know where to begin. They weren't asking impossible questions. Most of the time they simply needed someone to explain things in plain English or point them towards the right next step. I realised that information wasn't the problem. There is already more property information available than anyone could ever consume. The real problem was confidence. People didn't know which advice to trust. They worried about asking what they thought might be a silly question. They became overwhelmed before they'd even taken the first step. That's when the idea of Parker began to grow. Working with the team at Denovo, we didn't start by asking, "What should Parker know?" We started by asking, "Who should Parker be?" That turned out to be a much more important question. I wanted Parker to be calm, patient and encouraging. Someone who would explain things clearly without making people feel inadequate. Someone who would happily say, "I don't know," rather than invent an answer. Someone who would guide people towards trusted professionals when they needed specialist advice. Every decision came back to the same philosophy: People First. Property Second. As Parker developed, something unexpected happened. I stopped thinking of him as another feature on the website. He became the front door to the whole Property Powwow experience. Instead of asking someone to search through courses, blogs, tools and resources, Parker could simply ask, "What are you trying to achieve?" From there, he could guide them to the next step that was right for them. Looking back now, I realise Parker isn't really an AI assistant. He's the digital version of the conversations I've been having with people at networking events for years. Listening first. Understanding where they are. Then helping them move forward with confidence, one step at a time. That's why I often describe him as the sat nav for your property journey. A sat nav doesn't drive the car for you. It simply helps you find the best route from where you are to where you want to be. That's exactly what Parker was created to do. The Rules We Gave Parker As Parker slowly took shape, I realised we weren't just teaching an AI about property. We were teaching him about people. Every conversation, every response and every decision came back to one simple question: "How do we want someone to feel after they've spoken to Parker?" That question shaped everything. These became the unwritten rules behind every answer Parker gives. Tell the truth. If Parker doesn't know the answer, he says so. There is no pretending. No guessing. Trust is far more valuable than appearing clever. Explain things in plain English. Property can feel complicated enough without unnecessary jargon. Parker's job is to simplify, not to impress. Never make someone feel silly. Every experienced investor started by asking basic questions. Parker treats every question with the same patience and respect. Build confidence before complexity. Helping someone take one confident step is far more valuable than overwhelming them with ten complicated strategies. Know when a human is needed. Parker was never designed to replace people. Sometimes the best answer is introducing someone to a mentor, broker, solicitor or accountant who can help further. Encourage progress, not perfection. Property isn't about having every answer before you begin. It's about making the next good decision. One step at a time. Looking back, I realise these weren't really rules for Parker at all. They were the principles I'd been trying to live by throughout the whole of Property Powwow. Parker simply gave them a voice. He's not the hero of the story. He doesn't replace relationships. He doesn't replace experience. He simply helps people feel confident enough to take their next step. And perhaps that's why people connect with him. Not because he's an AI. But because, behind every answer, are the same values that have shaped Property Powwow from the very beginning. People First. Property Second. Always.

Looking Back

Looking back now, I realise I was never building software. I was trying to recreate the sort of person I'd always wished had been beside me when I first entered property. Someone patient. Someone honest. Someone who could say... "Let's work this out together." I think that's why Parker feels different. He's not trying to impress anyone. He's trying to help.

Reflection

Every founder creates products. But every product also leaves its mark on the founder. Parker taught me something I wasn't expecting. Intelligence isn't what people are searching for. Reassurance is. We live in a world where anyone can find information in seconds. What people struggle to find is someone—or something—they trust enough to ask the question in the first place. If Parker can become that safe place... then he'll have achieved far more than answering property questions. He'll have helped people believe they can take the next step. And that's always been what Property Powwow is really about.
